Turok 2 Seeds of Evil / Re: Turok 2 EX Turok 2 remaster 2017
« on: March 24, 2017, 03:04:16 PM »
IN the N64 MP each character had some gimmick, like Adon who had low hp and and fast health regen, etc.

This should be added as an option for multiplayer.

For me, the more options, the better.  One can't have enough choice when it comes to giving a game a long online MP lifespan.

Personally, I really hope to see all the options that are in the PC multiplayer and then some.

Though, perhaps they plan to keep some stuff back for a Rage Wars release.  That way they'd have some selling points that they might otherwise not have...

I was super excited to see that the GOG release has been updated.  Sadly, there's still no MP server goodies but at least they're proving they're working on the game. :)

Turok General Discussion / Re: What Turok is your favorite? (poll)
« on: March 24, 2017, 02:59:12 PM »
I've chosen Turok 2 as my favourite simply because that's the one I've put most hours into.  I don't know how much of my life I've thrown into that game but it's a lot!

The first game is super cool and I love it as much as SoE but I just haven't spent as much time with it.

I'm ashamed to say that I've never completed Shadow of Oblivion (so please don't spoil the ending!).  I got it at the end of my time with the N64 which I then traded in to get my 'Cube and then eagerly awaited Evolution.

Evolution was fun enough but I must admit I was a little underwhelmed...  I suppose, at the time, I just presumed that it would push the GameCube as hard as the first 3 games pushed the N64.  And those bloody loading times... Grrrr!  I also really, really missed the wobbly camera when Turok climbed things.  In the earlier games Turok felt like he had real heft and weight behind him.  The GameCube game just didn't have that weighty movement.  Evolution has a really lovely soundtrack though.  I love it and still listen to it on a regular basis.

The Game Boy (Advance) games were just too hard for their own good.  It's a shame because I think there was a lot of potential for a great 2D series of Turok games.  GBA Evolution isn't too bad though.  Again, the music is great.

Turok '08... Well, I don't really count it as much of a Turok game.  It's just too generic and feels like a me-too kinda game.  Even Turok's haircut screams Gears of War.  Why couldn't Turok look like bloody Turok!?  Disappointment aside, I suppose the game's okay but as has already been mentioned it's just not a good Turok game...

Info/Help / Re: Is There an Official Wiki?
« on: March 24, 2017, 02:24:46 PM »
Adblock works for the intrusive ads but Wikia still owns all the maintainers work.  For example, operative Im spends a month updating the Dynamite comic page and putting lots of work into it.  Dynamite don't like what's been written and contact Wikia.  Wikia can just remove or edit with no explanation or recourse because once anything is on one of their sites Wikia then owns it.  That's not what a wiki should be about.

A while back the folks at Doomworld ran into a similar problem with Wikia changing things for their own ends.  The maintainers eventually migarated to a truly neutral page where information and data is safe.  It makes me feel a LOT better about updating pages.  My work becomes everyone's work - not some faceless corporate entity making money off the back of peoples' free labour...

Anyway, I'm ranting again.  Please don't take offense if you have no problem with Wikia.  Just my personal view. :)

Thanks, and, it's okay, I do have two eyes.  Though neither are as good as they used to be!

I have never played T2 multiplayer on the PC.  I mainly played the game on the N64 only getting the PC version a few years later.  To be honest, I'm terrible at multiplayer FPS and my only real experience is playing Halo 2 with some friends for a few months and Doom back in the Skulltag days.

Looking around here it seems that the PC game still has a bit of a player base.  How active is it?  How do people get on with the less than fluid frame rate!?  Is it fun?

I understand your ambivalence towards the T2 remaster.  It's exciting that new life has been breathed into something you love but at the same there's always that sense of a missed opportunity to have "done it right".

Still, better a flawed remaster than no remaster, eh?  Perhaps it'll lead to a great Rage Wars PC port. :)

@ Gazer:  I (don't! :P) see what you mean regarding the invisible player skins.  That does seem like a bit of a game killer.  I mean what happens if everyone on a map chose to go invisible... That could be pretty boring!

Still, aside from that major oversight it looks pretty fun overall.  Here's hoping they fix the skins thing once they've got more stable and usable net code in place.

As for your thoughts on the relationship to Quake, I think you're probably right.  For me, that's a good thing.  Quake is a fantastic series and deserves more praise in the mainstream than it gets.

Half-Life isn't the be-all, end-all of the FPS legacy.  There.  I said it.  Feeling better now... :P

Anyway, back on topic.  How's the second patch doing?  Has anyone spent much time with it yet?  I'm really curious to see how it's all going for the GOG update.

Ah, I just presumed that you were in on the decision as you seem to be the main maintainer of the wiki.

Thanks for replying. :)

I'm toying with the idea of helping out.  My knowledge of the series isn't great but I enjoy tweaking formatting, grammar and other menial tasks.  My reticence comes from it being on Wikia.  I just don't like their content ownership rules and the overuse of huge ads.  Both kinda go against the whole wiki philosophy... perhaps I can reconcile this stuff in my old brain...

Still, enough self righteous whinging from me.  You're doing a great job.  The wiki contains so much useful and interesting stuff.  It's really pretty impressive.

Between your work and this forum it seems Turoks future is in good hands. :)

Thanks for the replies. :)

I do have one question though.  I don't mean any offense (don't want to come across all high and mighty!) but is there a reason that you chose Wikia over a less commercial wiki solution?

I entered the giveaway in the hopes of getting in on the multiplayer and beta testing though I'm not sure how it works.  Do you 'pull the name out of a hat' once the timer runs out?  I've never heard of that site before. :)

Also, just curious, how popular is the multiplayer turning out to be?  Do you guys think it has staying power?

Thanks for the welcome. :)

I know a lot of people dismiss Rage Wars as 'just a standalone T2 multiplayer game' but for me it was the first Turok game I owned having only played T1 at my friend's house.  It'll always have a special place in my age-addled heart... especially that title music.  Love that tune!
